Adventures in paper making!

I’ve been wanting to this for a while with the kids — but my ‘kit’ was burried away… We’ve been moving things around the basement because of construction and on wednesday, a rainy day, i thought I’d go check if I could see it — and by chance/miracle…. it was on top of the boxes!

I love love love handmade paper — and would love to make a stash to use… I’d really like to make cotton rag paper, i haven’t tried it yet and have to figure out how it’s done…

Here’s a crazy overload of photographs of 2 toddlers making paper for the first time in a tutorial sort of way! I’m very certain it wont be the last time!

Ripping paper. I have to say that showing them how to do this had a tiny part of me thinking “is this like showing them to draw on walls?” but so far they haven’t tried to rip anything else appart.

Then, you stuff the paper pieces in the blender.

Let’s make pulp! (i’m thinking this is their favorite part)
blender!!

Sleeves up! this is going to be wet!!
on se retrousse les manches!

Setting up the mold in the water…

Pouring the pulp – another favorite part.

Playing with pulp. This is MY favorite part. we played for a while — and they slowly got used to the pulp feeling on their hands — they’d go from pulp to rince, with a little more time in the pulp each time!

Voila! a new piece of paper. well, at this point an 8.5×11 area of wet pulp!
voila! une nouvelle feuille de papier

Sponging — Alexandre especially loved this part – and in true Alexandre fashion, he’s trying to figure out ‘how it works’ as you can see!

Paper, drying — i put it outside for a few non rainy minutes — but then it had to be moved inside. My instructions say to iron it — but I’m not a fan of the flatten/curly effect from it…

The end. (until of course a new adventure! must figure out something quick – it’s another rainy day!)

  3. Thanks for the replies :)

  4. You are SO smart and creative, Annie! I love this – I need to try it myself. I had to LOL at your, “is this like showing them to draw on walls?” Ha!

  6. My daughter saw this post and said, “I wish I could do that!” I have a paper-making kit gifted to me long ago that has never been used. If I can find it, it should be a perfect activity to go along with the week of rain we have forecast for us around here.
